Bill,
A voltmeter tells precious little about the state of the charging system.
The battery charging voltage chages by temperature, so you cant even tell if
the
battery is charging unless there is a gross condition (battery voltage below
12v, or above 16v).
Any voltage between 13 and 15 might be correct for the current opperating
conditions.
If safety is your bag, then consider a shunt ammeter, it measures the
voltage
drop across a shunt resistor to display current, which keeps the high
current leads out of the cockpit.

Has anyone put a volt meter in their car v. an ammeter? My cousin who
is rewiring said it is simpler, safer and does the same job. Thoughts?
