steering colum

Anybody have any suggestions on how to free up a frozen telescoping column ? 
mine is stuck all the way in, making the wheel hit my knees while driving. 
(aftermarket wheel)  the center rod with the wedge will not move, afraid to 
hit it as it looks like someone else went at it before, although there is a 
little movement in the rod side to side
