And those of us who ran Corvettes with side pipes learned to turn the outlets
down instead of to the side.

Yes and I've seen a cone run over more than once by the same car at the same
point get crushed flat and come back up still in the box...it was when I was
working the starter for a Southbend Region event and Mike Zik uhr took his CP
Camaro and had to turn hard left after the lights running directly over the
inside cone 3 consequetive runs in a row.

There was another time when I saw Rick Ruth obliterate a cone completely when
it was sub 30 degrees and the cone was shattered but the base was still in the
box.B B Cold cones do get brittle and when struck at +60 mph crumble into
little pieces...B B I was working the corner and recording cones but since it
was still in the box, we let it go.

Then there was a day of high wind, Jim McKamey came through at speed past a
narrow gate, the wind shear from his wings tipped over the cones on both sides
and the cones fell in towards the course so we had to count them both even
though there was no contact.

This seems like a good time to put on my old codger hat and relate
my favorite cone story. B Boy, this list has been around for 20 years,
what a surprise.

Anyway, I managed to make it to Kansas for the 25th anniversary
of the Solo Nationals, Killer Spit in tow. B '97 it was, back when this
list would see hundreds of messages in August before the big event.

I was working the course for ESP. B A red Mustang comes screaming
through a gate and WALLOPS one of the cones, major hit. B The cone
goes under the car, hits the rear tire and goes sailing maybe 25 - 30 feet
into the air. B It hits the ground, bounces and jumps around a bit, and
ends up *standing upright* within the outline of the original location.

I've never ever seen a cone that was displaced so much end up not being
displaced. B I couldn't call it in on the radio, I was laughing too hard!
