Here's how I make mash. Peel spuds. Cut into fairly big lumps. Boil until the lumps break with a fork without significant pressure. Drain, return pan to heat and mash with a fork holding pan over heat for a few seconds. Remove from heat, continue to mash adding a (very) little milk and butter.
