SU or solex carbs? Since you mention vacuum advance, I assume SU's.

Disconnect and plug the vacuum advance line, and set the idle (should
be about 700 as I recall). Then time it to 16 degrees BTDC, if you do
indeed have a non-smog (15 degree mechanical advance) distributor.

Remember to reconnect the vacuum line when you're done. It goes to
the little vacuum bib on the top of the front carb in front of the dome
(U20; on the R16 it's on the bottom of the rear carb). It does not go
directly to the intake manifold.
