My group 53 has the positive terminal towards the rear and it works out
great, since the '+' side needs to go around the back of the engine and down
to the starter. The negative terminal goes to the frame, body and one of the
alternator mounting bolts on the engine. The battery is installed with the
terminals towards the inside of the engine compartment to keep them away
from the hood workings.

Subject: Type 53 Battery Question

The 1966 (and probably earlier) Roadsters used a long thin battery, a type
53. The early Corvair also used a type 53 with the negative pole on the top
left (looking at it lengthwise). If one uses a 53 in a Roadster, the
negative pole should be on the top right, as the ground is toward the front
of the car. This would require a type 53R, or using a type 53 and having
the
battery cables hook up closer to the fender that the engine. I cannot find
a
type 53R, although a type 51 R is close.

What do others do to get the layout correct?
