I know exactly what's wrong - the mechanic knows jack about Roadsters or
SUs.

He probably meant that the bushings for your throttle shaft may be worn.

Go find yourself a place that works on British cars. Forget a Nissan dealer.
The mechanics where I buy my parts from are clueless about Roadsters or
240Zs and even more clueless about SUs.

I don't know if 1600 shafts are still available. I bought a few sets when
Rallye had them on sale many years ago. I do know that Apple Hydraulics make
their own and can rebush the carbs too. They normally charge 90 for the pair
to do that but you have to disassemble them and reassemble them.
