I had a non-member friend look at this for me.  He deals with customer
virus and other PC issues for Best Buy.  Here is his response to the XP
and Norton issue.

Unfortunately, no, XP doesn't use DOS. The only way I can think of 
is to use a program called Lost & Found and scan the drive to see what 
files it can recover, otherwise say goodbye to them and don't use Norton 
Utilities again. Don't use any third party utilities, Bill Gates doesn't 
like it and this will happen everytime you use them. XP already has 
these programs in it.

    Also, you might try using system restore and back it up before you 
used the program...............
