ait filter/ chrome

I have recently acquired two chrome air filters for my SU carbs on my 67
1600. some of the chrome has come off or discolored. I would like to remove
the chrome and paint the filter bodies with automotive paint to match the
car. is there a product that will take chrome off without damaging the
metal?
