You would actually be surprised at how accurate these gauges were when new and 
how accurate they can become?once they are repaired properly.?The problem 
starts when?we mix different size wheels and tires or?substitute the wrong 
cables to drive them. (And from there is gets worse through the?mutlitude of 
attempted?repairs performed on the kitchen table) Believe it or not, they still 
use the very same style mechanical tachometer on virtually all small aircraft 
as are used in our cars and I have seen them last well over 30 years.?Most of 
our cars are?over 40 years old so it's not?a stretch so say they may need a 
little attention but if done correctly, you will probably only need it done 
once.

The factory tach is at least as inaccurate as the speedo if not more.
