Having done the reverse, ie 4 speed to 5 speed - i do KNOW that the 1600
backing plate won't work on a 5 speed, and I ASSUME therefore that the 2000
won't work on a 1600. Note also other possible changes, rear transmission
mount, drive shaft, throwout bearing arm, location of gear shift lever in the
tunnel, different throwout bearing arm gasket, speedo cable connection and
possible change in the nylon drive ratio that drives the speedometer.
You will probably want to change the tranmission front seal, the clutch plate
and pressure plate ( 2000 will work for the latter two) and the throwout
bearing itself - since you are there and it is such a pain to r&r the engine.
