Was the Jeep engine rebored with new pistons, and if not, how much cylinder
taper was there?

If the engine was not removed from the vehicle, you had an overhaul, not a
rebuild. Excessive taper can create excessive crankcase pressurization, hot
running, and trouble passing emissions. And there's no fix short of removing
the engine and having new oversize pistons fitted. Sorry 'bout that.
