It is nuts, but just barely.
My Maserati Mistral has a water pump that has a completely unique carbon
seal. It also has more bearings and a higher degree of complexity than I've
ever seen on any rational machine. As I remember it has six bearings--might
be seven. It's got concentric shafts and a magnetic clutch that drives the
fan. I decided to rebuild it, and casually knocked the seal out and set it
aside to find a replacement, I sourced all the bearings at the local shop,
no problem. But when I tried to find a new seal I found that there was only
ONE in existance, and the infamous Frank Mandrano of MIE had it. He wanted
$1500 for it in the early 90's. I cleaned mine up, found that I had
fortunately not damaged it, and put it back in.
A new crankshapft for my Honda 150 Dream is over $700. I paid $100 for the
bike. Honda has all the parts, but they apply a multiplier for each year
that they keep them.
The heck with stocks and bonds, I'm going to invest in NOS Mustang and Dodge
Challenger parts.
