While not a racer, I used to autocross my TR4...

After several seasons I decided to balance the engine and lighten the 
flywheel as a winter project. The machinist found my crankshaft had a crack 
in the 4th journal. The fellow's comment was "It looked solid enough but 
when I had it on the lathe it sounded wrong"
