Right. That's the story I was given years ago, which propelled me into two
years of high school German and two more years of it in college.
And after the lapse of more than a few decades I can do exactly two things with
all I learned: If I'm ever in the Fatherland and need a pencil, I know how to
ask for it in German and, when the occasion arises, I can say "Die eingeborenen
sind heute abend unruhig" (The natives are restless tonight).
To paraphrase Bluto, "Four years of school down the drain."
