According to the race results available on the VSCDA website, the FOT scored
another First Overall in the Father's Day Scramble Handicapped race at the
event late Sunday afternoon.
Terry Stephens, #62 TRIUMPH TR4 won beating the second placed car by over 42
seconds. The Annual Father's Day Handicap Race is a 35 year old tradition at
the Blackhawk Vintage Classic. In a Handicap Race all of the cars are staged
and started based on their best lap time of the week end. The slower cars
start first, and the faster cars are released after them in a staggered fashion
so that theoretically all of the cars should hit the finish line
simultaneously. That does not happen of course, but on paper it suggests that
it could.
At that very first Blackhawk Vintage Classic I can remember VSCDA Charter
Member Tom Moore, Group ONE (Pre WWII) MG-T racer handicapping that first
starter's grid on a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I. Of course computers have
evolved in the 35 years since, and it is considerably easier to do today with
modern Timing and Scoring equipment. But VSCDA has been doing it for 35 years.
Incidentally, Tom Moore was there again this past week end, and racing the
same MG-T. As far as I know he still drives that car from Chicago to the
track, races it all week end, and then drives it back home Sunday night.
I also remember this all this stuff because I won the very first Handicapped
Race the VSCDA ever held. I was the rabbit in Old Blue, and no one caught me.
Such handicapped races are especially great when you are at a new track and you
are still finding time in every session.
Anyway, HOORAY for Terry Stephens and another TRIUMPH First Overall.

PS Recently someone referred to Tony Drews as, Tenacious Tony. Boy! That's a
fact. As far as I can tell, Tony was the only other FOT TRIUMPH racer who
stuck around for the Dad's Day Scramble Handicap. As far as I know Tony raced
in every session he was eligible for last weekend (except for the Hardship Warm
Up session on Sunday morning). Tony cut his racing teeth at Blackhawk Farms
Raceway, and to this day...he still does not pass up a chance to race there
every chance he gets. Tenacious Tony Indeed!

Subject: [Fot] Kudos to Brian and Jason, plus a few notables
I don't think enough can be said on how Brian Garcia and Jason Ostrowski raised
the bar on Kastner Cup planning and execution. Triumph Central was two huge
tents, with a winners podium so big it put Sam's head into the tent! Plus, they
built a bar that was so big and complex it should have needed a Certificate of
Occupancy from the local authorities before we could use it! It was dubbed the
Lucas Pub, with a sign encouraging us to get intermittently lit!!!
It was certainly a treat to see all those TR3's on track. While Jeff lead the
charge of sidescreen cars, a couple notables worth mentioning.
John Styduhar was on fire, finishing 7th overall with a best lap time only
9/10th's of a second off Jeff's. Wow, way to go John.
Also, we had not one, but TWO Ambro's on track all weekend. The Alexander car
was co-driven by second generation Mark and third generation Brendon. But it
was the Vic Schuster Ambro that was really getting it done, as Vic finished
14th overall in the K-Cup race and was looking fast. It is really great to see
an Ambro burning up the track, it looks like all your hard work on that car is
paying off, Vic. Well done!
I am still amazed we had 32 starters out of 35 Triumphs at the event, "Never Be
Beaten By Equipment" indeed!
Thanks to all who made it happen, Kas and Peggy, Joe and Jan, and of course all
the efforts of Brian and Jason. It was a great time...

Old Blue (got quite the flogging as well)
PS, while we were sweating it out at Blackhawk, the Triumph/MG Challenge race
was going on at Mosport. Since the vast majority of our racers were at
Blackhawk, we there were only 5 Triumphs to battle it out with something like
30 MG's. We had a two year winning streak on the line, and it was up to our
guys to show those MG's what real race cars are. Halfway through lap two, the
sky opened up, and the rain came down in earnest. At the end of ten laps, they
threw the checkered flag to our own Mark Wheatley, who finished 47 seconds in
front of the second place car!
So now we have THREE years of bragging rights to this race, who is with us to
make it FOUR???
