Hi - if the bushing is worn, it needs to be replaced. I would not run the =
gear with a thin shim under it, the shim will not last. I just looked at Mo=
ss and they have that distributor bushing listed for $75 plus or minus.
If you have slop with that distributor drive, you will never get the igniti=
on timing to be rock solid.

On page 1.130 and 1.131 of the Workshop Manual it describes the procedure f=
or obtaining the correct clearance or float for the distributor gear driven=
by the camshaft.=C2=A0 It gives two scenarios: one where there is interfer=
ence of the gear and the bushing; and a second where there is not enough cl=
earance or float.=C2=A0 What it doesn=E2=80=99t consider is if there is too=
much clearance between the gear and the bushing.=C2=A0 That is the case on=
 my TR4 engine.=C2=A0 I had 0.016 clearance and added a 0.010 shim under th=
e gear to get the desired 0.006 clearance.=C2=A0 Has anybody else had this =
experience?=C2=A0 And what did you do about it.
