Hi Eric,

Your distributor is 40 plus years old. Replacing the springs alone won't fix
it.

The distributor is driven by the camshaft at half engine speed - thats
actually a lot of revolutions in the past 40 years.. The bearings wear out -
in the body, and in the distributor cam. The counterweights rub across their
locating plate. If the distributor is correctly maintained as per the
workshop manual - it will last around 40,000 miles before it requires a
rebuild. Most aren't correctly maintained. When was the last time you oiled
the cam gearing in your distributor?

The springs - when everything else is in perfect condition - dictate the
advance curve - but if you stretch the spring while fitting it - you will
effectively change the advance curve. The springs - even new ones - need to
be correctly adjusted on a distributor analyser machine by someone who knows
what he is doing to set the advance curve accurately.

My advice is to get the distributor rebuilt and regraphed, and set to a
correct advance curve for your engines specification
'
Best regards
Chris.

Subject: Distributor advance springs

> List, sorry to bother you again with my problem, but it seems that no
company I contacted is able to provide advance springs for the Lucas DM6
distributor. 2 weeks ago someone on the list told me to try to order them
with Cambridge Motorsport in the UK. I phoned them and they told me they
have them on stock. They were very helpful and a few days later I received
them - but obviously not the right ones. After phoning them again they
admitted that the DM6 is not the distributor they are normally dealing with
and that they are specialized in the 25D and 45D type.

the DM6. So my plea is would someone on the list share their knowledge
regarding the source of supply with me or do I really have to buy a new
distributor?
