Jon,

Did the differential crater or did the axle break taking the diff with
it. On my '62 Healey, I have been using the original differential case
and axle shafts for racing for about 12 years now. Of course I've
replaced all the bearings and use a Quaife diff . Last year I broke the
driver side axle shaft close the hub - fast right corner upshifting
from 3rd to 4th. Replaced this broken 42 year old axle with another one.
Probably will only last another 42 years ;-) . My engine puts out quite
a few ponies, and has been pushed pretty hard in races ranging from
Mosport to the PVGP to the wide open high-speed track at Texas World
Speedway.

Without knowing the specifics of what let go and when, my $0.02 worth
(and worth every penny), I'd check the drive shaft to diff pinion shaft
angles (specifically to make sure you aren't getting excessive axle wind
up), magnaflux both axle shafts, use a good limited slip or Quaife
unit, and obviously replace the bearings. I use Red Line in my diff -
can't definitively say it helps, but psychologically makes feel good.

Regards, Fred
