G'day

Perhaps I am just getting more and more grumpy and cynical as I get
older but I have this vision of all my American friends fart-arsing
about making plates etc to bolt up to the lifting points just to get the
bloody engine out of the car.

What's wrong with slinging a stout piece of rope or length of chain
around the engine and lifting away? It's easy to adjust to get the
correct angle and the like, it's dirt cheap and as it's an example of
improvisation it's also very Australian. That probably explains the
whole thing as there are many people who would go to a lot of trouble to
buy and use a Mont Blanc pen when a pencil will do.

I have lost count of the number of both 4 and 6 cylinder engines I've
pulled out without trouble using ropes, a pulley and garage door beam.
Plus only a few weeks back I cracked under the pressure of modernity and
used a chain around the Healey Duncan engine. For those who don't know
2.4 litre Riley engines weight more than their Austin cousins.

Ps I do have a Mont Blanc pen and it's gorgeous but sometimes it's
overkill when a pencil will do the job just as good.

I made up plates that fit the generator bracket holes and the rear holes

of the manifold. I didn't want to take a chance on having the engine
drop on the aluminum shroud while taking it out. The chain was 3/8"
links and I used a load leveler to adjust the angle of the
engine/transmission assembly. Even then I was worried about the chain
hoist not being up to the lift. Better safe than sorry.
