Joe, I have to disagree here.  I theorize that 40 years of compression have
created the flattened look which you describe.  Was able to locate some 1/8
inch cross section O rings at Lowe's and 4 years later seem to holding up
fine.

Yep.  You just have to be careful not to destroy the washer.
