You are right on the mark.  This exact same thing happened to a friend
of mine.  One night he gets a call about the Shelby GT 500 he was
selling for $6000 on eBay.  Of course he has no idea what the guy is
talking about.  Turns out some scammer in Italy hijacked his account and
was selling a 64 Corvette and the Mustang through it.  Of course he
needed the shipping fees up front.  I posed as an interested buyer and
had quite the fun email thread going back and forth.  Even set up a
meeting in Rome between him and my "son who would be there on a school
trip".  Then I forwarded the whole deal to eBay security on the off
chance he would be stupid enough to show up.

Never heard a thing back from them...

I believe the scammers hijack actual eBay users accounts to show
positive 
feedback.  Don't attack the ebayer, he probably doesn't know he's been 
hijacked.
