Ken,
I can't imagine it being cheaper. I had my head re-worked for well under
$200 by a professional shop. That price was based on me removing and
installing. Valves and springs will add to cost.
As long as it is not cracked it should be servicable.
Has anyone noticed an improvement with an aluminum head? I'm interested to
know.
