Greetings from hurricane ravaged South Florida!

Just wanted to let you all know that I'm fine, my family is fine, the Healey is
fine, and the house - well the house can be repaired. After a week of living
without the comforts and conveniences of modern civilized society, it is
wonderful to once again have electricity, phones, and Internet service. You
just don't appreciate how dependent we are on these things until forced to do
without for an extended period of time. I'm one of the lucky ones as fully two
thirds of the residents down here are still doing without.

One positive thing about this experience is the way people have come together
to help one another in dealing with the aftermath. In a world that is
becoming increasingly impersonal it is truly heartwarming to see. I have seen
young people helping their elderly neighbors to get their yards cleaned up. I
have seen people with generators allowing as many neighbors as possible to plug
in. I have seen convoys of power crews from as far away as Michigan converge
on South Florida to help restore service.

As a commercial roofing contractor I too am on the front lines of the recovery
effort. I have been all over South Florida assessing damage, and while the
level of damage is not devastating, it is so widespread that it will surely
take years to put right. This will probably be my last post for a while as I
expect that the only days off I will take for the remainder of the year will be
Thanksgiving day and Christmas. But rest assured that on those two days I will
be taking the Healey out for a nice long drive.

Take care and Healey on!
