Patrick -
With all the fart-arsing my first guess would have been did you fill it up
with Mexican Food, but then I realized you are so far south of the border
you are down under... so I know it can't be a burrito!
Actually your instincts are very good and I would say that it sounds very
much like a bad coil. A good way to check this is to run the car for a few
minutes and then put your hand on the coil. If it seems significantly hotter
to the touch than the rest of the motor, then this is very likely your
culprit. Replace it, coils are cheap! Also make sure the coil wire is not
loose or falling apart.
I would also go through your whole ignition system tops and tails, with
particular attention paid to replacing the disty rotor, as we all know there
are many bad ones floating around.
If none of this works, other potential culprits are a bad fuel pump or
clogged fuel filter (if you have one).
Let us know how it goes.
 Best Regards,
 Alan
