Hi Michael,

Thanks for your reply. I checked the output and it read 12.6V with the car
running at 2K RPMs. With lights on at 2K RPM I get 11.+V. I would expect the
readings presented the battery voltage (as the alternator was installed and
connected when I took the reading).

I agree with your NAPA assessment. The first alternator from NAPA was found to
be defective and they replaced it with the second. I had the same results with
the second and, upon return to NAPA, they, suspiciously, tested it and declared
it was good. I took the second NAPA alternator to a rebuilder and he found an
intermittent regulator. Reinstalling the now-rebuilt alternator and....the
same results. Again, back to the rebuilder for testing and the alternator
performed perfectly. Now, upon installing the alternator for the 5th, and
last, time and the result...the same as all the times before.

Either I have the worst luck with alternators or I have something else wrong.
At this point, its even money.

All the best,

Ray Carbone

Have you checked output with a voltmeter directly at the alternator
terminals?

I have encountered several NAPA alternators defective out of the box for
various reasons--bad bearings and faulty regulators. I think the term "NAPA
Gold" refers only to the length of the guarantee as opposed to the quality of
workmanship employed in the rebuilding process.

I have a Leece-Neville (Prestolite) alternator on my BN1 that I like very
much--it has an external regulator.
