Thanks to Rich, Ed, Greg and Michael for the advice on my BN1 windshield
wipers. I am particularly grateful to Rich for the pictures.
I finally got gutsy and pried the left arm off the shaft. It was corroded
and consequently time-consuming to remove. Fortunately, I did not scratch
anything.
My BN1 apparently does not have original wiper arms. The arms on my car do
not have bolts at the ends. There are splines at the ends of the arms that
are supposedly intended to slip on and off.
The female splines on each arm slips over a collar that has male splines.
An allen screw holds the collar in place on the shaft. This screw was not
tight -- apparently the cause of my problem.
I cleaned things up, applied a little grease, tightened the allen screw and
re-assembled. The wipers now seem to be OK.
