Thanks for all the suggestions. In answer to some of them,  the battery 
is brand new, fully charged, (specific gravity shows full charge and is 
kept on automatic battery tender), no problem with cranking, tach works 
fine.
As for changing to silicone brake fluid, I do intend to rebuild wheel 
cylinders, calipers, master cylinder, clutch master and slave cylinders 
and completely flush out the steel lines and reservoir and replace the 
flexible hoses.
