If your starter solenoid is original--probably, if it has the
button--and it has 100K miles
or more on it then I'd replace that first. It's easier and cheaper than
messing with
the starter.
Starter motors don't have to work that hard/often (unless you're using
your Healey
to deliver pizza ;). Usually, something in the Bendix gear fails (the
little spring that
holds the pinion gear back, for instance) before bushes go. It could
possibly be that
your brushes or commutator are worn, though.
