I think it's because the panel on a RHD car would be pretty close to the
pedals.  It just gives a bit more clearance.

Does anyone know why the outside vertical upholstered panel in the driver's
(LHD) foot well is a single solid panel while the same panel (outside
vertical)
on the passenger side consists of an outer panel with an opening in it & a
second panel behind the opening? I think this applies to all 6 cyl. cars.
