Hi, Tom -

"Once ingaged, it will not disingage when the switch is switched to
normal---it has a mind of its' own and kicks out when it wants to."

The only purpose of the throttle switch is to ensure that the overdrive will
NOT drop out when the dash switch is turned off UNLESS you have your foot on
the accelerator. This prevents the overdrive from disengaging when you
switch off the dash switch while you are letting the car slow down in gear
under engine braking, which makes the overdrive "see" a negative torque,
which it doesn't like.
So, strictly speaking, the quote above describes the way the overdrive works
normally (except for the last part!).

If the overdrive relay contacts are intermittently sticking closed due to
burning/welding or dirt, or something else that prevents them from opening,
then the overdrive would stay engaged regardless of the dash switch or
throttle switch position until the relay contacts opened. Overdrive should
immediately disengage when the gearshift is moved out of 3rd or 4th, though,
if the electrics are the problem. If it does not, then I would focus on the
hydraulic operation.

Once ingaged, it will not disingage when the switch is switched to
normal---it has a mind of its' own and kicks out when it wants to.

He took it to a local garage that does lots of work on Healeys, Jags, etc
and they began to do an analysis. They focused on electrics. Finally they
said the throttle switch wasn't working properly. So, they pulled it and
cleaned the points in it. Then "electrically" it was working as
advertised. But--driving it home, it was operating the same as before.

When the car was at this garage earlier, they added a 90 wt ND oil to the
tranny. I have always used a 30 or 40 wt ND and mine works fine.

My guess is that his problem may be caused by the oil thickness or some
debris in the valve pressure opening--or a combo of both.

I've checked the archives and can't find a close answer there. Anyone want
to hazard a quess on what is happening?

BTW, I think the OD will work (in and out) even if the throttle switch is
disconnected--it just wont work as advertised---but will operate directly
from the dash switch. Am I off base?

TIA
tom
