I have found that quite often these lenses just pops out and fall down
inside the instrument pot. If your instrument has never been opened there is
a good chance that you will find it inside. This brings us to the next
question. First take it out of the dash, then screw off the chrome ring.
This may sound easy, but can be quite difficult. If you turn the instrument
upside down you will see that there are some tabs on the chrome ring. These
tabs will line up with openings in the pot edge when you turn the ring. Then
just lift off the ring, taking care not to drop the glass on the floor. The
ring has some gunk inside that makes it very difficult to turn, but with
patience and some dirty words it will work. Perhaps you need to pry a little
on the tabs with a small screwdriver. But be careful, otherwise you will
destroy the chrome ring. Then there is a black metal ring with a rubber
sealing ring located just inside the glass, this can be pried off with a
little screwdriver, again take care not to bend it too much. Then turn the
instrument upside down, and the lens will fall out.
The lenses were probably just small enough to make a snug fit in the hole in
the black "grommet". The grommet is not made of rubber, it's something
harder, some kind of plastic. So, if you find your lens, just put it back in
the hole together with a little glue.
The lenses were all red, but after 3000 MKII car #14171 the high beam was
blue on some export cars (per Clausager).
What to make them of? Any red transparent plastic with a slightly matte
finish will do I would imagine.

Best regards, Per
