Gentlemen:

Redline's MTL (Manual Transaxle Lube) and MT90 are specially formulated with
friction enhancing additives for the stated purpose - check out their
web-site. These two products are one of the very few 'non-standard' oils
that work well in a Healey gearbox/overdrive - if anything too 'slippery'
gets in there, you have an immediate overdrive problem.

My take on these synthetics is that they are generally a little 'lighter'
than their numbers in 'dino' oil. Many of us in my area have been using
either MTL or MT 90 in early Jag, Healey and MGB overdrive gearboxes for
many years - it's an outstanding product for our Healeys, and really does
improve shift quality without a down side in the overdrive cone clutch. I
prefer the slightly heavier MT90 - the MTL is pretty watery on a hot day,
but either one is an improvement over the engine oil that the factory
specified.

I've been using MT-90 in my BJ8 gearbox for a couple of years. The
only thing I noticed is that the O/D engages a bit quicker (and
shifting is smoother, too).

FWIW, I used 20W-50 engine oil prior to that. The Bentley's
manual I have says that is acceptable.
