You are right, you do not "have to" but you "can". Some classics do run 
lean in certain conditions when you hold back the throttle a bit going 
down a hill, e.g. Weber/DellOrto/Solex side drafts, causing a lot of 
spitting and plopping. A fatter spark will often help.
What are/is LBC?
