I've been on the list since 1996, and joined the forum early after its
creation in 2001. However, I also prefer the format of the list and I
dislike the custom on the forum of "pseudonyms" and not being able to
communicate directly with the other members without going through the
Private Message system. My experience has been only about a 20% response to
private messages.
Anyway, lately the traffic on the list has been so sparse that I've been
forced into more participation in the forum. Most of the old list regulars
apparently are long gone. Too bad.

In some ways, I prefer the list over the forum. One doesn't have to select
the subject and scroll down the page to read the latest responses. Plus I
have a local copy of the messages on my computer.
But one can't include images in the emails.
