Steve:

The paper gaskets =E2=80=93 which are basically dust seals =E2=80=93 =
should go on dry. It=E2=80=99s the o-ring that does all the sealing. =
Too thick a coating on the paper has been known to prevent the axle =
flange from giving the right amount of =E2=80=98squeeze=E2=80=99 on the =
o-ring, thereby actually producing a leak =E2=80=93 especially if the =
o-ring is slightly undersize.

If you are worried about tearing the paper as you try to get it over the =
studs, you can soak the gasket in water for awhile to help with that. =
In fact, the early cars didn=E2=80=99t use the paper at all.

Flame away gang!

Subject: [Healeys] Rear axle gasket question

Am replacing the paper gasket and o-ring on one of my axles. Did I read =
here the gasket should be soaked in water in order to make it more =
pliable?

=20

I=E2=80=99ve always installed these with hylomar and never had any =
leakage problems from the gasket or o-ring, but the gaskets do tend to =
tear.

=20

Would appreciate any informed comments.
