Start the engine and let it idle until warm or drive a few miles to that 
purpose.
Set the idling speed at around 800-900rpm.
Set the dial to the required advance at idling with the vacuum line 
attached (see your workshop manual). Connect up to the battery and 
position the clamp on Nr.1 plug lead.
Loosen the distributor clamp.
Set the distributor to TDC on the marks.
Tighten the clamp, not to tight.
Recheck.
It is that simple.

WATCH OUT though for moving parts like the fan and water pump/dynamo 
pulleys/belts.
