[Healeys] idle on BT7

trying to adjust idle today on friend's BT7.  could get idle to pretty much 
hold 800-900 rpm but as soon as clutch is 
depressed the rpm would rapidly decrease about 500 rpm, then slowly drop until 
engine died.  this is a new one for me.  
have seen a couple hundred rpm drop but not where engine dies.  any ideas?
