A good quality conventional acid/lead battery would nowadays easily last
between 8 and 10 years when used regularly and using a trickle charger
in de garage. Also fill up with distilled water regularly if at all
possible, however these days many are sealed for life.
The 6V old pattern batteries which are now available are apparently made
to a very poor standard as a less than 2 years lifespan is very little.
You would have expected that may be in the 50's for the cheapest cowboy
batteries. You can probably claim under warranty.

In my last 5 daily drivers I had the factory original batteries for more
than 10 years. In my Jensen-Healey a new battery was installed in 2000
by the P.O. When I bought the car in 2008 the battery was still OK.
During that time the car ran less than 1000mls. I had to get a new
battery in 2009 which is still functioning well. During this time I did
about 30.000mls although the last few years I am limited to about
3000mls by the insurance company.

Two small 12V batteries in parallel have more than enough capacity for
the starter motor. The dynamo/alternator will be well able to charge any
12V battery/ies as long as the electrical consumption of the car does
not exceed the charging capacity of the dynamo/alternator. No worries there.
