Hi Mike,
I recently experienced exactly the same problem with newly rebuilt a BT7
side shift gearbox and overdrive unit when turning it backwards before
adding oil.
Like you I suspected the Sprague clutch but after considerable
investigation the cause turned out to be the new 2nd gear syncro ring
which, when the box was turned backwards, was winding itself tightly onto
the cone of 2nd gear.
This is something I've never experienced before but concluded that it was
unlikely to present a problem after the box has be run with new oil.
This may not be the cause in your case but certainly it is something worth
considering.
