Steering kickback is mainly due to one or both of the front tires impacting=
 with an obstacle. Type of suspension and/or steering design has a lot to d=
o with the result (kickback) of the steering wheel. As Perter mentioned veh=
icles that are used =E2=80=9Coff road=E2=80=9D or on rough roads will exper=
ience the sore fingers that happen when the right front tire bangs that 2 f=
oot boulder on the road shoulder and the steering wheel suddenly breaks you=
r death grip you have on it.=20
Assuming that the device is a steering damper we could surmise that the BJ8=
 of this thread may have had a hard life.  Hard but perhaps fun!

rom its days as an Ausca-bodied race car.

I contacted the previous owner of 42351 who owned it from 1990 to 2014.=C2=
=A0 He had no knowledge of the gizmo on the steering rod and said he did no=
t recall his mechanic either installing it or mentioning it.
I called the telephone number I have recorded for the owner prior to that (=
1986 =E2=80=93 1990) but got an answering machine with a message in Spanish=
.=C2=A0 I left a message about the reason for the car and invited a return =
response.=C2=A0 If I get one, I=E2=80=99ll post it to the list.
