I'd go to my local hardware store and buy a selection of roll pins that
match the needed diameter as closely as you can estimate. One of them will
probably be a close enough match and would probably be less likely to fall
out than a nail.

I would first try to make something up from available stock. I don't think
that the pin needs to be too hard and I have had great success with using an
old nail of the correct diameter and cutting it to length. You could make up
a couple of them and carry them along in your spares so that you can fix it
on the road should the need arise.
