I'm not aware of any other no-brainer solutions, other than the programmable EFI solution. The Electromotive box allows you to put out a pulse signal for a particular tach, regardless of the engine, I believe. If I was super-motivated (and I'm not) I could probably design and build a signal conditioning box to put out the right square wave. I'm just buying new gauges. One possible option, though no easier, is to put a 4-pulse trigger rig on the crank (or two on the cam). You could either use 4 flying-magnets, or a Hall-effect sensor w/a 4 notch wheel. Wiring up one would be trivial, but you would have to make some braketry.
GreenGauges in the UK makes 4" gauges and they are nice looking. However you are buying a Smiths product, the bastard-cousins to Lucas.
One of my back-burner projects is a new fiberglass dash that can take the more common 3-5/8" or 5" gauges, use more modern idiot-lights, and have out-board (by the doors) A/C ducts, a place for modern heater controlls and make more room for some of the new cube-shaped heat & A/C units behind the dash. If I get to the production phase, I'd offer it such that it could be padded with leather/vinyl and have walnut inserts, or be made with a clear gel-coat over kevlar/carbon fiber if someone wants a race-look.
Dream on.....

I presume all of the people who dropped a V8 into their MGB had the tach problem. I already have the description on how to change the original 4 cylinder tach to 8 cylinder but I would appreciate words on any other solution. If you have done a conversion/replacement I would love to hear about it. It could be a subject to be covered in the British V8 Newsletter !!

I am currently trying an SD1 tach implant under the guidance of Martyn Harvey
