Jarls' post on the causes of rear leakage out of a TD engine is spot
on. The spiral cut into the crank can wear when the main bearings
wear. Unless the rear cap is renewed (together with line boring) you
will get leakage. There is a rear main seal kit available from Moss.
This has gotten mixed reviews in this forum. I put one on last summer
and have yet to see any drips. This kit enables the installation of a
real seal around the large diameter of the crank at the rear. If you
buff the seal area well, I don't see why it shouldn't work even if
your main cap is worn. The down side is that installation requires
removal of the crank.
