Yes, every manufacturer does this. It is mandatory in order for the
alternator to work. I have a basic alternator theory article on the VTR web
site that you may want to check out. It explains, in layman's terms, how the
various components in an alternator works. I'am in Atlanta this week, so I
don't have the URL handy, but you can start with www.vtr.org, go to the
maintainence page, and follow the trail from there.
