Not long after I got the 'B I went on a couple of those all-day advanced
driver training courses. You really get to know how your car will react
under stressful and emergency conditions. You get to know your braking
distances and how the car reacts to maneuvering whilst under heavy
braking, etc, (and how it slops around under emergency lane changes -
which is when I first decided on all my anti-sway gear).

In one class the other six cars were Pepsi sales guys in fleet vehicles
(they get an insurance reduction if their guys do an approved course
like this). For half the road lessons they disconnected the ABS to
teach the guys REAL braking, but of course had the ABS on other times
because they had to learn to use it.

Everyone should do this stuff. I learned lots about the car - and about
my own driving.

We had the TWO SECOND RULE reinforced with demonstrations of driving at
35mph behind (but beside) another car and had the lead car suddenly hit
the brakes. Add in reaction time and it was frightening to see how far
'into' the other car you would end up if you travelled too close!

Certainly made me think.

PS Even with sloppy suspension, the Ford (Pepsi) drivers were impressed
with the 'B in emergency lane changing :-)
