Just because I am never obe not to step up when given the opening :-)

Let me say that I am certain that there are people who successfully run
hard on wire wheels, it just happened that I am not one of them. I tried
it on old wheels and new wheels and had bad luck on both so I gave in
and went for solid steels and haven't looked back. But I far preferred
the look of wire wheels on a 'B.

As for tyres, I currently run 185/60 Yokohama A509s - but only because
they were the widest I could fit on the wires (and then only just).
When I changed over to solid wheels I could not afford to buy a new set
of tyres (the A509s were just a few months old) but my next set of tyres
will be 195/60s because I can fit those on these rims. I still manage
to slide around too much on the 185s but when I first got the car it was
shod with 175 and these were certainly not low profile tyres and I even
did a few laps on them... now *that* was an experience.

The 185s have been great on long drives and I think are perfect road
tyres even if the low profile makes me want to drop the car even lower
(ha! and I have already fractured the front spoiler after just two weeks
and with 5 inches of road clearance).

Now... 205s... maybe too much for the road but I dream of them on the
track - and those that have them show off their lovely flared guards. A
nice look :-)
