This is a good tip and I had heard it before too and was talking to British 
Wire Wheel about a year or so ago about it and they do not recommend it as it 
will trap water in the spine and tend to cause rust and other problems.  They 
recommend leaving it as is and cleaning the grease as necessary.  Yuk ;)
