You need a small allen wrench that will fit in the tiny hole you will
find if you look closely around the knob.  Insert the long end into the
hole and push on the spring loaded locking pin to release the knob and
slide it off.  It is unfortunate that this isn't better documented in
the manuals, it seems that most of these controls are damaged by "brute
force" removal.
