Classic (!) symptom of an intermittent connection in the ignition LT
circuit, a break in this circuit will affect both running and the tach.

Check the connections in the white - tach - white - coil - white/black -
distributor circuit, paying particular attention to the flexible wires
inside the distributor.  When accelerating in any gear the change in vacuum
causes the points plate to twist, which flexes these wires, and eventually
they can break either at the terminations or inside the insulation.
